The Private Pilot Licence for aeroplanes is the Transport Canada licence that lets you fly an aeroplane as pilot-in-command, but not for pay. It is the usual first step for anyone who wants a flying career in Canada.
Official website ↗The Private Pilot Licence, Aeroplane, is issued nationally by Transport Canada. It is required by law before you can act as pilot-in-command of an aeroplane. Anyone who wants to work as a pilot must hold at least a Transport Canada pilot licence, and this is where most people start.
With this licence you can fly for personal reasons and carry passengers, but you cannot be paid to fly. Many career pilots earn it first, then go on to a commercial licence and extra ratings. It is the base for jobs such as flight instructor, charter pilot, bush pilot, agricultural pilot, aerial firefighting pilot, medical evacuation pilot, search and rescue pilot, corporate pilot, commercial pilot, test pilot and eVTOL pilot.
Training happens at flight schools and flying clubs across the country. You learn in the air with an instructor and on the ground in the classroom. Most students fit training around work or school, so the time it takes can vary a lot from person to person.
There are two main assessments. First is a written exam that covers topics like air law, navigation, meteorology and aircraft operation. Second is a flight test with an approved examiner, where you show your skill and judgment in the aeroplane. Your instructor will tell you when you are ready for each one.
The licence itself stays valid, but you must keep your aviation medical certificate current to use it. You also need to stay recent in your flying, which means flying regularly and completing training that keeps your skills fresh. If you do not meet the recency rules, you may need to fly with an instructor before carrying passengers again.
