The AME licence is issued by Transport Canada and lets you sign off on aircraft maintenance work. If you want to certify that an aircraft is safe to fly, you need this licence.
Official website ↗An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, or AME, is a licensed professional who inspects, repairs and certifies aircraft. When an AME signs a maintenance release, they are confirming by law that the work was done properly and the aircraft is fit to fly. Only a licensed person can do this.
The licence is issued nationally by Transport Canada, so it is valid in every province and territory. It is divided into categories, such as aircraft with airframe and engine work, avionics, and structures. You choose the category that fits the kind of work you want to do. It is a good fit for careers such as aircraft mechanic, helicopter mechanic, avionics technician, aircraft inspector, aviation safety inspector and aircraft maintenance manager.
Transport Canada sets written exams for each licence category. They cover aviation regulations and the technical knowledge needed for your category. Prepare well, since you need a passing mark on each exam to move forward.
Keep your licence current by following Transport Canada's rules for licence validity. Your licence stays valid only if you meet the requirements, including recent work experience in aircraft maintenance. Check with Transport Canada for the current details.
