The CPTD and APTD are professional credentials from ATD for people who work in training and talent development. They are voluntary, so no one in Canada needs them to work, but they show employers that your skills meet an international standard.
Official website ↗ATD is an international association for talent development professionals. It offers two related credentials. The APTD is for people earlier in their careers. The CPTD is for people with more experience who want to show deeper expertise.
Both credentials cover the main areas of the field. These include instructional design, training delivery, learning technologies, coaching, managing learning programs, and measuring results. Many Canadian employers know the ATD name, so the credentials can help you stand out when applying for roles as a corporate trainer or learning and development specialist.
You can earn either credential from anywhere in Canada. The process is the same across the country, and no provincial or territorial licence is involved.
Both credentials are earned by passing a written, computer-based exam made up of multiple-choice questions. The exam tests your knowledge of the main areas of talent development, including how to apply that knowledge in real workplace situations. The CPTD exam is aimed at more experienced professionals and goes deeper than the APTD exam.
Your credential stays valid for a set period. To keep it current, you need to complete professional development activities during that time and report them to ATD. A renewal fee also applies. Staying active in training, conferences, and learning projects usually covers the requirement.
