The CPHR is a national human resources credential in Canada. It is voluntary, but many employers value it as proof of professional HR knowledge.
Official website ↗The Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) is a designation for HR practitioners. It is issued by CPHR Canada and its member associations. It shows that you have met a national standard for HR knowledge and professional conduct.
No law requires you to hold the CPHR to work in HR. Still, it can help you stand out when you apply for jobs or seek a promotion. It is useful in roles such as benefits manager, compensation analyst, corporate trainer, chief people officer, chief diversity officer, employee assistance program manager and executive recruiter.
The designation is built around a shared set of HR competencies. These cover areas like talent management, total rewards, employee relations, learning and development, and strategic HR leadership. Holders also agree to follow a code of ethics.
Candidates normally take a national written exam. It tests your knowledge of core HR topics and how you apply them to workplace situations. Most people spend a few months studying. Your association can tell you how to register and what study materials are available.
You keep the CPHR by staying a member in good standing with your association. This means paying your annual dues and following the code of ethics. You are also expected to keep learning through ongoing professional development, and you may need to report it each cycle.
