The SHRM-CP is a voluntary human resources credential from SHRM. It shows you can handle day-to-day HR work, and it is earned and used in Canada even though it is an international designation.
Official website ↗The SHRM-CP is for HR professionals who work on the operational side of the field. That includes supporting staff, carrying out HR policies and working with managers. It tests both what you know and how you use that knowledge in realistic workplace situations.
No one in Canada is required to hold it to work in HR. Employers may still value it as a sign of skill and commitment. It can help in roles such as benefits manager, compensation analyst, corporate trainer, employee assistance program manager, chief people officer and executive recruiter. Canada also has its own designation for the same type of work, called the CPHR, which is listed separately on this site. Some people hold one, and some hold both.
The exam is a computer-based test with knowledge questions and situational judgment questions. The situational questions present workplace scenarios and ask you to choose the best response. It covers HR topics such as people, organization and workplace skills. Plan for a few months of regular study before you sit it.
The SHRM-CP is not for life. You keep it current by earning recertification credits through learning activities over each renewal period. These can include courses, conferences, workshops and other professional development. You can also recertify by retaking the exam. Keep records of what you complete so renewal goes smoothly.
