The vocational rehabilitation designation is a national credential from the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada. It shows you meet professional standards in helping people with injuries, illnesses or disabilities return to work. It is voluntary, so you do not need it to work in the field.
Official website ↗The Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada offers two related designations for people who work in vocational rehabilitation. They are the Canadian Vocational Rehabilitation Professional and the Registered Rehabilitation Professional. Both recognize that you have the education, experience and ethics expected in this work.
Vocational rehabilitation professionals help people who have been hurt, become ill or live with a disability. They assess a person's skills, abilities and limits. They then plan a path back to suitable work, whether that is the same job, a changed role or a new career.
Having a designation is not a legal requirement to work as a rehabilitation counsellor or vocational rehabilitation counsellor. Many people earn it anyway. It can help your résumé stand out, build trust with clients, insurers and employers, and show that you are committed to the profession.
Requirements can change over time, so confirm the current process with the association. Where an assessment is required, it checks your knowledge of vocational rehabilitation practice, ethics and professional standards. Plan to spend some weeks reviewing your course material and the association's recommended resources.
You need to renew your designation on a regular schedule to keep using it. Renewal usually involves paying a fee and showing that you have kept learning through continuing education. Keep records of your courses, workshops and other professional development so renewal goes smoothly.
