The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a voluntary credential from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). It shows that you are trained to support clients as a frontline behaviour analysis worker, and it is not legally required to work in Canada.
Official website ↗The RBT credential is for people who deliver behaviour-analytic support directly to clients. Many work with children and youth on the autism spectrum. Others support people with developmental or behavioural needs in homes, schools and community programs. RBTs do not design treatment plans. They carry out plans written by a supervising behaviour analyst.
The BACB is an international certifying body, and it certifies people who live and work in Canada. The credential is voluntary. No law requires you to hold it. Still, many employers prefer it or ask for it. It can help you stand out when you apply for roles such as therapist or instructor therapist in applied behaviour analysis (ABA) programs.
The RBT exam is a written, multiple-choice test taken on a computer at a testing centre. It covers the core skills of the role, such as measuring behaviour, helping clients learn new skills, reducing problem behaviour and following professional and ethical standards. Most people study for a few weeks to a few months, depending on their background.
Your RBT credential must be renewed on a regular schedule set by the BACB. To renew, you need to keep working under supervision, complete a yearly competency check and follow the BACB's ethics rules. Keep good records, and renew before your credential expires.
