The CMA is an international credential from the Institute of Management Accountants that shows strong skills in financial planning, analysis and decision support. It is voluntary, and no one in Canada needs it to work as an accountant or financial manager.
Official website ↗The Certified Management Accountant credential is issued by the Institute of Management Accountants. It focuses on the work done inside a business: budgeting, forecasting, cost control, performance review and strategic planning. It is a good fit for people who want to guide business decisions with numbers.
This is the international CMA. Anyone earning the international CMA in Canada does so as an added credential. It does not replace the CPA, which is the route for public accounting and some regulated roles.
Employers in Canada may value the CMA for roles such as management accountant, financial manager and corporate controller. It can help you stand out, especially in companies that work across borders or follow international reporting practices. It is a career booster, not a licence.
The exam has two parts. Each part is a written, computer-based test with multiple-choice questions and written response scenarios. The parts cover financial planning, performance and analytics, then financial decision making and professional ethics. Most people study for a few months and take the parts separately. The tests are taken at approved centres.
The CMA does not expire, but you must keep it active. This means completing continuing education each year and staying current with your membership. You must also follow the issuer's code of ethics. If you fall behind, your credential may be placed on inactive status until you catch up.
