The Canadian Securities Course, or CSC, is the main entry-level credential for people who work in the securities industry in Canada. It is issued by the Canadian Securities Institute and is required by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization before you can advise on securities.
Official website ↗The CSC teaches the basics of how Canadian financial markets work. You learn about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, derivatives and the rules that govern them. You also study ethics, how securities are bought and sold, and how to read basic financial information.
Many people see the CSC as the first big step into a career in investing. It is a common starting point for investment advisors, wealth managers, personal bankers and compliance staff. It is also useful for people in trading and investment banking who want to show they understand the industry. If you plan to advise clients on securities, you must complete it as part of the proficiency requirements set by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization.
The CSC is assessed with a written exam made up of multiple-choice questions. It covers all the main topics in the course. You need to reach the required passing grade to earn the credential. Plan on a good stretch of focused study and plenty of practice questions before you sit it.
The CSC itself does not expire once you have passed it. However, if you work in the securities industry, you may need to keep up with ongoing training and rules set by your employer and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. Staying current on industry changes is a normal part of working in this field.
