About

Glaziers install glass in windows, doors, storefronts, curtain walls, skylights, shower enclosures and mirrors. They measure, cut, fit and seal glass, and they work with metal frames and specialty glazing systems. The work can be done on small homes or on tall commercial towers.

A certificate of qualification is issued by the province or territory where you train and test. When you also pass the interprovincial Red Seal exam, your certificate carries the Red Seal endorsement. Employers across Canada know and trust this mark. It can help you earn more, take on bigger jobs and move to another province without starting over.

How to get it

  1. Find an employer sponsor
Most people start by getting hired as an apprentice glazier. Your employer agrees to train you on the job and support your learning.
  2. Register as an apprentice
Contact the apprenticeship authority in your province or territory and sign up. They will track your progress and explain the rules where you live.
  3. Learn on the job
Work alongside experienced glaziers and log your hands-on hours. You will build skills in measuring, cutting, installing and safe handling of glass.
  4. Complete technical training
Attend the in-class training blocks at an approved school or training provider. You will study topics like blueprints, building codes, materials and safety.
  5. Pass the certification exam
Once you have finished your hours and training, you can write the final exam. Passing it earns your certificate of qualification.
  6. Earn the Red Seal endorsement
In most cases, the same exam gives you the Red Seal endorsement when you pass. This lets you work as a certified glazier anywhere in Canada.

The exam

The Red Seal exam is a written, multiple-choice test. It covers the main parts of the glazier trade, including safety, planning and layout, glass and framing systems, and installation. You can usually prepare with your training notes, practice questions and advice from your journeyworkers.

Licensed by each province

Each province and territory issues this itself, under its own rules. Each province and territory sets its own rules for apprenticeship, training and whether the trade is compulsory. The Red Seal endorsement is recognised everywhere, so a certified glazier can move between provinces and territories. Check with the apprenticeship authority where you plan to work for local requirements.

Keeping it

Red Seal certification does not usually need to be renewed. Your certificate stays valid as long as you remain in good standing with your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority. It is smart to keep your skills fresh with safety updates and new product training.
