LEED Green Associate and LEED AP are voluntary credentials that show you understand green building and sustainable design. No one in Canada needs them to work, but they help many people in design and sustainability careers stand out.
Official website ↗LEED is a widely used rating system for green buildings. The credentials are issued by GBCI and USGBC. In Canada, LEED is administered with the Canada Green Building Council, and the credential is the same one earned anywhere in the world.
The Green Associate level shows a broad grasp of green building basics. The LEED AP level adds a specialty, such as building design and construction, interior design and construction, or operations and maintenance. It suits people who work directly on LEED projects.
These credentials are not a licence. You do not need them to practise as an architect, landscape architect, designer or consultant. Many employers still value them. They can help you win project work, show your commitment to sustainability, and support a move into roles such as sustainability coordinator, manager or director.
Each level has a computer-based, multiple-choice exam. The Green Associate exam covers broad green building knowledge. The LEED AP exam has a specialty focus and goes deeper into how projects are planned and rated. You will need to read questions carefully and apply what you have learned to practical situations.
Your credential stays active through a regular cycle of continuing education. You report learning hours related to green building and pay a renewal fee. If you let it lapse, you lose the right to use the title, so keep track of your reporting dates.
