The Certified Health Executive (CHE) is a national credential for health leaders in Canada. It is voluntary, and it shows that you have met a recognized standard of leadership practice.
Official website ↗The CHE is issued by the Canadian College of Health Leaders. It is meant for people who lead teams, programs or whole organizations in the health sector. This includes nurse managers, clinical directors, hospital administrators and public health administrators.
You do not need the CHE to work in health leadership. Many employers do value it, though. It can help you stand out when you apply for senior roles or move from clinical work into management. It also shows a commitment to ongoing learning and to the standards of the profession.
The credential looks at your leadership skills, your knowledge of the Canadian health system and your professional experience. It is open to people from many backgrounds, including nursing, allied health and administration.
The CHE process includes a written exam that tests your leadership knowledge and your understanding of the Canadian health system. Most people spend a few months studying and reviewing the College's preparation materials. Check with the College for the latest exam details and any study resources it offers.
The CHE must be kept current to stay active. You usually do this by taking part in ongoing learning and professional development, and by staying a member of the College. Keep records of your activities so renewal goes smoothly. Check with the College for the current renewal rules.
