The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) is an international credential for fundraising professionals, issued by CFRE International. It is voluntary, so no one in Canada has to hold it to work in fundraising.
Official website ↗The CFRE shows that a fundraiser has the experience, knowledge and ethical standards expected in the profession. It is recognized in many countries, and Canadian fundraisers earn it and use it here. Many work in charities, hospitals, universities, arts groups and other not-for-profit organizations.
No law in Canada says you must be certified to raise funds. Still, many employers like to see the CFRE on a resume. It can help you stand out when you apply for senior roles, and it signals a commitment to ethical practice. It is a good fit for people who already work in fundraising and want to build their career.
The CFRE exam is a written, multiple-choice test. It covers the main areas of fundraising practice, including ethics, donor relationships, planning and managing fundraising programs. Many candidates use study guides and practice questions to prepare.
The CFRE does not last forever. You must renew it on a regular cycle by showing that you are still working in the field and still learning. This usually means reporting your continuing education and professional activity. You can also choose to take the exam again instead of renewing through points.
