Webb Institute was founded in 1889 by shipbuilder William H. Webb as a school for naval architecture and marine engineering in New York City, and it moved to its current Glen Cove campus in 1947. It is the only undergraduate institution in the United States devoted exclusively to naval architecture and marine engineering, and it has historically offered every admitted student a full-tuition scholarship. Its graduates are highly sought after by shipyards, design firms, the U.S. Navy, and the maritime industry, and the college is known for placing virtually all of its graduates into jobs.
Webb is one of the smallest colleges in the country, with roughly 100 students living on a waterfront Gold Coast estate overlooking Long Island Sound. Students follow a single rigorous, lockstep curriculum combining engineering, design, and humanities, and all complete a required winter work term in industry each year. The tight-knit community runs on an honor system, with student-run traditions, a strong sense of camaraderie, and close mentoring from faculty and alumni.
