Pick one career to see what it costs, when it pays for itself and what it earns over 20 years (and up to 40). Add a second career if you want to compare. For each one, add college, a certification or neither. Salaries and school costs fill in from our career and university pages, and you can change any figure. Everything is an estimate in today’s dollars. Only looking at a loan? Try the Student Debt Calculator.

Both paths

A rough guess for food, a phone and getting around while you live with family. Change it to suit you. It is used only in the years a path chooses to live at home.

Living costs are the same on both paths, every year, college years included, unless you choose living at home for a path.

Which path leaves you better off?

How this is worked out

Money ahead is everything you have taken home after tax, minus living costs, minus school and certification costs you paid yourself, minus loan payments, minus whatever you still owe on the loan. It assumes you keep whatever is left after your living costs. Year 0 is the start, at age 18.

These are estimates to help you compare, not financial advice. Real salaries, costs, aid and loan terms vary.
