The Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) was founded in 1997 as part of the University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky, and enrolled its first class in 1997 as the first osteopathic medical school in the state. It was created in response to a severe physician shortage in central Appalachia and has built its reputation on producing graduates who practice primary care in rural and medically underserved areas. KYCOM is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation and awards the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
The college sits in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, offering a small, tight-knit learning community with strong faculty mentorship and early clinical exposure. Students train through a regional network of clinical rotation sites across Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, and beyond, with a heavy emphasis on osteopathic manipulative medicine and community-based care. Rural health programs, scholarship partnerships, and service-oriented student organizations define a student experience centered on service to Appalachia.
