The University of Mary Washington was founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Fredericksburg and later became the women's college of the University of Virginia. It became independent in 1972 and officially adopted its current name in 2004 after becoming fully coeducational. Today UMW is recognized as one of Virginia's top public liberal arts and sciences institutions, noted for its emphasis on undergraduate teaching, undergraduate research, and writing-intensive instruction.
The main campus features Georgian-style red-brick architecture and sits within walking distance of downtown Fredericksburg, about 50 miles from Washington, D.C. and Richmond. Distinctive strengths include historic preservation, the Digital Knowledge Center and Domain of One's Own initiative, and the Honor Code, which governs a self-regulated community. Students enjoy small classes, an active campus life, strong internship opportunities in the D.C. corridor, and a close-knit, intellectually curious community.
