The University of Georgia School of Medicine is not a standalone institution but is the UGA-based campus of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), launched in 2010 as the AU/UGA Medical Partnership. Located in Athens, it was created to expand Georgia's physician workforce, and in recent years UGA has moved to establish its own independent School of Medicine, with state approval and accreditation processes underway. Students earn the MD degree from Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia, one of the oldest medical schools in the Southeast (founded 1828).
The program is known for small class sizes, a collaborative learning environment, and integration with UGA's strong life sciences, public health, and pharmacy resources. Students train in Athens-area hospitals and clinics, including Piedmont Athens Regional and St. Mary's, and are drawn to the school's emphasis on primary care, rural medicine, and community health. The Athens setting offers a college-town atmosphere with the academic resources of a flagship research university.
