The University of Connecticut School of Medicine was established by the state legislature in 1961 and enrolled its first class in 1968 in Farmington. Together with the School of Dental Medicine, it forms the academic core of UConn Health, the state's only public academic medical center. The school is known for a collaborative, patient-centered curriculum, strong primary care and community-based training, and growing research in genetics, cancer, regenerative medicine, and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health.
Students train on the Farmington campus, which is integrated with UConn John Dempsey Hospital, and at affiliated hospitals across Connecticut, including Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital, and Connecticut Children's. The school's class size of roughly 100 students per year creates a small, supportive community. Distinctive strengths include the Health Career Opportunities Program, MD/PhD and MD/MPH dual-degree options, early clinical exposure, and an emphasis on serving diverse and underserved populations in Connecticut.
