Founded in 1890 as Territorial Normal School, just one year after the Land Run of 1889, the University of Central Oklahoma is the state's oldest institution of higher education. It evolved from a teacher-training school into a comprehensive regional university in Edmond, just north of Oklahoma City, and is part of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education system. UCO is best known for its Transformative Learning model, its strong programs in education, business, forensic science, and the arts, and its large, diverse enrollment.
The campus blends historic architecture such as Old North with modern facilities, and offers a lively environment with a large international student population and many student organizations. Distinctive strengths include the Forensic Science Institute, the College of Fine Arts and Design, and the Jazz Lab, along with strong aviation, nursing, and teacher education programs. Students benefit from internships and career connections in the Oklahoma City metro, and many are first-generation, commuter, or working students balancing coursework and employment.
