Morehouse School of Medicine was founded in 1975 as a two-year medical program at Morehouse College, and became an independent, fully accredited institution in 1981. It was established to address the shortage of Black physicians and physicians serving underserved communities, and it became the first medical school established at a historically Black college or university in the 20th century. Consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the nation for social mission, MSM is best known for producing primary care physicians who practice in underserved areas and for its leadership in health equity research.
Located in Atlanta's West End near the Atlanta University Center, MSM offers a close-knit, mission-driven culture with small class sizes and strong faculty mentorship. Distinctive strengths include community-based training, public health, neuroscience, cardiovascular research, and health policy through institutes such as the National Center for Primary Care. Students engage in service learning and community partnerships, and the school fosters a collaborative environment rooted in cultural competency and social justice.
