Maryville University was founded in 1872 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart as a small Catholic school for women in downtown St. Louis. It moved to its current Town and Country campus in 1961, became coeducational in 1970, and shed its religious affiliation to become an independent institution. Today it is best known for its health professions, business, cybersecurity, and data science programs, and for being an early adopter of online learning and technology-infused teaching.
The campus is a wooded suburban setting about 20 miles west of downtown St. Louis, with modern residence halls, a state-of-the-art Art and Design building, and the Maryville Athletic Center. Students benefit from small classes, a focus on career readiness through internships and experiential learning, and strong ties to St. Louis employers in healthcare, finance, and technology. The Saints compete in NCAA Division II, and campus life blends a close-knit community with extensive online and graduate offerings.
