Founded in 1901 as the Medical Department of Temple College, the school is one of the oldest and largest medical schools in Pennsylvania and part of Temple University's Health Sciences Campus. It was renamed in 2015 in honor of alumnus and philanthropist Lewis Katz following a major gift. It is widely recognized for strong clinical training, a significant record of graduates entering primary care and practicing in Pennsylvania, and research strengths in cardiovascular disease, cancer, addiction, and metabolic disorders.
Students train in the heart of North Philadelphia, learning alongside Temple University Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and regional campuses in Bethlehem (St. Luke's University Health Network) and Allentown. The class is among the larger in the country and prizes diversity, service learning, and community engagement, with a hands-on curriculum that emphasizes early patient contact. The school also offers MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and extensive pre-matriculation and pathway programs for underrepresented and nontraditional applicants.
