Overview

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) was founded in 1992 in Erie, Pennsylvania, and has grown into one of the largest medical schools in the United States by enrollment. The Elmira, New York campus opened in 2011 on the site of the former Elmira Psychiatric Center area and the Elmira Business Institute-adjacent downtown, expanding LECOM's reach into the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region. LECOM is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation and is best known for producing a high volume of primary care physicians and for its multiple curricular tracks.

The Elmira campus offers a close-knit, professional graduate environment centered on the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree, with students able to choose among Problem-Based Learning, Lecture-Discussion, and Directed Study pathways. Students benefit from clinical training partnerships with regional hospitals such as Arnot Health and Guthrie, with an emphasis on serving rural and underserved communities. Campus life is geared toward graduate and professional students, with modern simulation labs, osteopathic manipulative medicine training, and a strong sense of community among a smaller cohort than the main Erie campus.
