The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) was founded in 2002 in Blacksburg, Virginia, through a gift from the Via family and a partnership with Virginia Tech. The Louisiana campus opened in 2020 in Monroe on the University of Louisiana Monroe campus, as the state's first private osteopathic medical school. It is fully accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and awards the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. The college is known for its mission to prepare globally minded, community-focused physicians who address the needs of rural and underserved communities.
Students at VCOM-Louisiana benefit from a small-campus environment with close faculty mentorship and a curriculum combining basic sciences with early clinical exposure and osteopathic manipulative medicine training. The Monroe campus is located in northeast Louisiana, where students gain hands-on experience through clerkships at regional hospitals and clinics across the Mississippi Delta region. Student organizations, service projects, and global health outreach opportunities, including medical mission trips, are central to campus life.
