The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) was founded in 2002 in Blacksburg, Virginia, through a partnership with Virginia Tech and the Via family, and welcomed its first class in 2003. It has grown into one of the largest osteopathic medical schools in the United States, with campuses in Blacksburg (Virginia), Spartanburg (South Carolina), Auburn (Alabama), and Monroe (Louisiana). VCOM awards the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree and is known for its mission to prepare community-focused physicians and improve health care in rural and medically underserved areas.
Students at VCOM experience a small-campus, close-knit culture with a strong emphasis on service, including global and domestic medical outreach trips. The curriculum blends basic science and clinical training with osteopathic manipulative medicine, and third- and fourth-year students complete rotations through regional hospital and clinic partners. Each campus offers its own distinct community while sharing a common curriculum, and the college also offers a Master of Biomedical Sciences program and other graduate degrees.
