Overview
Founded in 1898 as the Lakeside Hospital Training School for Nurses and later endowed and renamed in 1935 in honor of philanthropist and congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton, the school has a long history of firsts, including establishing one of the first nursing PhD programs in the nation. It is consistently ranked among the top nursing schools in the country, known for pioneering advances in nursing science, gerontology, HIV/AIDS care, and frontier nursing research. The school played a foundational role in advancing nursing as an academic discipline grounded in rigorous scientific inquiry rather than solely vocational training.
